Hiking

Whiteside Mountain Trail

One of our favorite hikes in close proximity to both Cashiers and Highlands! It’s a relatively moderate trail, looping 2 miles with views at the summit.

Rainbow Falls

A popular waterfall hike in the area. At just under 4 miles round trip, the trail through the Nantahala National Forest’s Gorges State Park passes by other impressive waterfalls (Turtleback Falls, Drift Falls, and Hidden Falls) before reaching the towering 150-foot Rainbow Falls. It takes an average of 2 hours to complete and is considered moderately challenging.

Panthertown Valley - Schoolhouse Falls

Another gem in the Nantahala National Forest, called the “Yosemite of the East.” The valley contains a 30+ mile network of rugged, backcountry trails for hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and others to explore. Each trail offers different conditions and challenges.

While you’re in the valley, make sure to check out the beautiful cascades of Schoolhouse Falls. It’s a short but scenic double-back hike (2.6 miles total) with the waterfall and rocky pool at the midway point.

AllTrails is a website and free app that helps you find and navigate local trails.

It’s a great resource to use before and during a hike!
